Sumi Sorting Oy’s plastic packaging sorting facility project has officially entered the construction phase today, June 10, 2025. Earlier this year, the project faced significant delays due to global challenges in the insurance markets, which especially impacted new investments in the circular economy sector. Now, a comprehensive insurance package has been secured through a foreign insurer, and groundwork at the site has begun.
Construction will proceed in phases: during summer 2025, groundwork and piling will be carried out. Once the delivery agreement with the process supplier is finalized, we will provide further updates on the construction timeline. The aim is for the domestic plastic packaging sorting plant to be operational in summer 2026.
Once operational, the state-of-the-art Sumi Sorting facility will significantly improve the sorting quality of plastic packaging waste. The plant will increase the availability of recycled plastic in Finland, reduce the need for transporting packaging waste abroad, and strengthen Finland’s self-sufficiency in the circular economy. The investment also supports the achievement of EU recycling targets, with a direct financial impact on the plastic levy Finland pays to the EU.
Background of the project:
Sumi Sorting Oy was established in 2024 when Sumi Oy acquired the process and construction plans, permits, and land lease agreements from Fortum Waste Solutions Oy (now NG Nordic Oy). The sorting facility will be built on NG Nordic’s existing industrial site on the border of Hausjärvi and Riihimäki, enabling all consumer plastic sorting, washing, and processing operations to be located on a single site in the future.
