Zombie batteries are a real threat – a single improperly sorted battery can cause a facility fire

In recent years, numerous fires have been reported at recycling facilities, in garbage trucks, and at collection points in Finland and around the world. A common factor in many of these incidents is incorrectly sorted or unsealed batteries and accumulators. A discarded lithium-ion battery can become a “zombie battery” that reactivates due to impact or heat. Such a battery can swell, leak, or even spontaneously ignite – potentially causing a large-scale fire at, for example, a sorting facility.

Facility fires can always be prevented with proper sorting

Recser Oy and Paristokierrätys Oy’s Zombie Battery campaign highlights important information and corrects common misconceptions about battery recycling. According to the campaign’s findings, the improper handling of batteries causes an average of over ten emergency service operations annually in Finland – and the actual number is likely even higher.

Key guidelines for safe battery recycling:

1. Set up a recycling point at home

Remove batteries from devices; if the battery cannot be removed, return the entire device with the battery still inside
Collect used batteries in a small plastic bag or container
Keep them out of reach of children and pets

2. Tape the terminals before returning

Batteries always contain some electrical charge, which can cause a short circuit – taping the terminals helps prevent short circuits and fire hazards
When taping, make sure the product information remains visible to ensure correct recycling

3. Return batteries to a grocerie store

Small batteries can be returned free of charge to stores that sell similar products
If no collection box is visible, hand the batteries directly to store staff
Larger batteries or larger quantities should be taken to regional collection points

Battery sorting will be mandatory starting August 2025

The EU’s new battery regulation introduces a sorting obligation for consumers: batteries must be sorted separately and returned to proper collection points. Thanks to producer responsibility, returns will still be free of charge.
