Big changes in the producer responsibility organisation – law amendment and prices increase activity

On 5 May 2023, we became a producer responsibility organisation for all packaging materials with the blessing of Centre for Economic Development, Transport, and the Environment for Pirkanmaa. Since then, the Sumi office has been busy receiving hundreds of new agreements!

It has been heartening to receive customer feedback indicating that people greatly appreciate our domestic recycling practices and the fact that the materials we collect are sorted in Finland. Naturally, it is also important to us for producers to compare recycling rates, which ensures that our uncompromising efforts are rewarded. Our goal is to make fulfilling the producer responsibility as cost efficient as possible for our customers.

When the deadline for the changes to producer responsibility transfer agreements (they will take effect in 2024) was passed on 30 June 2023 and the holiday season began in July, the b2b sector predictably slowed down for a time.
After the summer, however, the pace has picked up and the autumn season will be very busy with the release of the 2024 packaging recycling fees at the end of October, since this will activate producers still lacking an agreement to make a new one.

The law amendment taking effect at the start of January obligating companies with a turnover of less than a million euros to join a producer responsibility organisation within 2023 will require us to put in a lot of effort towards the end of the year.

That said, we are ready, and happy to accept all new customers.
