On 5 May 2023, Finnish Plastics Recycling celebrated its approval as an extended packaging producer responsibility organization by introducing the Sumilit characters, which represent the five different packaging materials. The materials differ from each other, and so do the characters. Since the Sumilits can be seen in our marketing, the new family members should naturally have their own names.
After much deliberation the jury made their decision. The criteria used were length of the name, some sort of reference to the material, usability in different languages and, in general, that the names were positive, easy to pronounce and descriptive.
The winning suggestions are:
Siru (glass), Kartsa (cardboard), Muppe (plastic), Metsku (metal) and Puupponen (wood).
