The first official year of operation for Suomen Maatalousmuovien Kierrätys Oy was highly successful in terms of both the volume collected and the quality of plastic delivered for recycling. The collection target of 2,000 tonnes was reached in less than four months by the end of November and was eventually exceeded by more than 300 tonnes. A total of 500 collections were carried out across Finland.
The service has received a great deal of positive feedback, and customers have been actively involved.
Operations in 2025 – Silage sheet plastics included in collection!
Following a successful pilot year, our operations will expand in 2025. We are doubling the collection target for bale wrap to 4,000 tonnes, and a new material—silage film—will be added to the pickup program, with a target of 500 tonnes. We continue to accept collection orders for bale wrap. Orders for silage films have been available since April 1, 2025, via the SuMaKi pickup order application.
Loads that meet order conditions will be collected from the farm free of charge
White and colored bale wrap, as well as silage film, must be sorted into separate piles. Nets, twines, or other types of plastic must not be included in the same pile. The plastics should be stored on a firm surface in a location that is easily accessible for a truck equipped with a grabber arm. During pickup, the driver will check that the plastic is suitable for recycling.
Recycling pays off
A recycling fee is paid for bale wrap purchased from SuMaKi member companies, which—if all conditions are met—entitles the customer to free farm pickup. In addition to the financial benefit, the collected plastics are delivered for recycling, after which they are reused as raw material by the Finnish bale wrap manufacturing industry. Environmental certification requirements for farms may also mandate proper recycling of plastic.
