Sumi Ltd

Sumi Oy is a Finnish non-profit producer responsibility organization (PRO) for packaging, responsible for fulfilling the statutory packaging producer responsibility on behalf of more than 1,700 companies.

Founded in 1992, Sumi originally operated as a voluntary producer responsibility organization for plastic packaging, while simultaneously developing a nationwide collection and recycling system for plastics. In 2023, Sumi expanded its operations to also cover the producer responsibility for metal, glass, cardboard, and wooden packaging.

Sumi actively participates in various projects that promote the circular economy and the recycling of packaging materials. One of its most significant projects is the construction of a new plastic packaging waste sorting plant that utilizes the latest technology to maximize sorting efficiency. This €44 million investment will at least double Finland’s plastic packaging sorting capacity, enabling the processing of up to 80,000 tonnes of packaging waste annually. The project aims to raise Finland’s recycling rate to the level required by the EU.

Sumi has also established a voluntary producer responsibility organization for the collection and recycling of agricultural plastics. The community includes the majority of Finland’s agricultural plastics producers. In its first year of operation, the organization collected more than 40% of all agricultural plastics placed on the Finnish market.
