Sumi Oy

Sumi is a Finnish non-profit packaging producer organisation responsible for implementing the statutory packaging producer responsibility for metal, glass, plastic, cardboard and wood packaging. Already one third of producers have chosen us as their contract partner, and about one quarter of all packaging material flows in Finland pass through us.

A producer is responsible for its packaging

Finland has producer responsibility legislation, which means that producers must organise the waste management of the products they place on the market and bear the costs of it.

Producers are the companies that pack their products, as well as importers of packaged goods.

The easiest way for a producer to manage their producer responsibility is to join a producer organisation.

When a company joins the producer responsibility scheme, it transfers its collection and recycling obligations to the producer organisation. The company is left with only two things to do:

  • Reporting packaging data
  • Paying producer responsibility contributions based on packaging data

Fees

In addition to the recycling fees, the producer is charged a one-off registration fee and an annual business service fee. SUP producers are also charged a separate SUP fee to cover statutory municipal clean-up, litter prevention and information costs.

Reporting

Packaging data can be reported either via detailed declaration form or light declaration form. Your company's packaging volumes (above or below 50 000 kg/year) will determine the timing of the reporting and when the packaging volumes are invoiced.
