SumiOn webinar recording and questions from participants
On this page you will find the material from the webinar and the questions asked and answered during the webinar.
Webinar recording
The next SumiOn webinar will take place in January!
In our second webinar in January, we will take a comprehensive look at how to use SumiOn, present all the different reporting options for small and large packers, and allow plenty of time for questions from participants.
In addition, we will deliver a comprehensive SumiOn guidance package to our customers in the first week of December, so that they can start preparing for January reporting in good time.
Sumi customers will be able to log in to SumiOn at the turn of the year.
Questions asked in the chat during the webinar and the corresponding answers by topic
Some of the questions asked in the chat are answered directly in the webinar video.
Light declaration form and Synkka
-
Will you show light declaring form in the webinar?
There are no changes to the light declaration form, so it works just like before. The only difference is that the data is entered in SumiOn instead of Rinki's extranet. The January webinar will go through all the reporting templates in more detail.
-
Will there be a simplified option of reporting for companies that mainly do international trade and do not package for the consumer market?
This comes directly from the legislation. Simplified reporting is possible for companies placing less than 50 000 kg of packaging on the market per year. Only packaging placed on the Finnish market will be reported to Finland. Consumer and business packaging will be reported separately.
-
Can smaller packers still report data once a year?
Yes, they can. With the introduction of SumiOn, smaller producers can also start reporting monthly or quarterly if they want to switch from annual reporting to a more frequent cycle — but there is no requirement to change.
-
Can products be transferred to SumiOn from Synkka?
Yes, they can. If the EAN code entered by the customer is already backed up by packaging information from Synkka, SumiOn will automatically provide it. The system can classify the product's packaging materials by eco-modulation class and also suggest a weight for each material. It is up to the customer to verify the information proposed by the system and either accept it or modify it. This feature will be available in January, when SumiOn opens to customers. Unfortunately, we were not able to demonstrate this feature in this webinar because we did not want to use anyone's real product data as examples.
EAN codes and product models
-
Reporting is based on EAN codes, what if we don't have EANs?
In SumiOn you do not have to use EAN codes, you can create your own product numbers or titles for your products.
If you do not want to switch to this new EAN reporting method at all, you can still enter packaging data in SumiOn in kilograms per material, exactly as you have done in Rinki so far.
-
Can sales volumes be reported in primary packaging and not in a sales lot or pallet?
Yes, it can be. Using SumiOns product models can be handy when products are sold in full pallets but reporting by primary packaging works just as well.
-
We have 35 different articles in the same product group, but they are all packaged in the same way. Can these be declared as a category?
Yes. Building a replicable packaging model is a great way to do this.
-
How are pallets and stretch plastics reported in the system in the case of mixed pallet deliveries?
In such a situation, the product model can be used, for example, for the sales lot only, but the pallet and wrapping itself can be reported in quantities per kilogram in its own packaging material cells.
Reporting
-
Will the reporting rhythm change?
No. Small producers will continue to report once a year, large producers can decide whether to report quarterly or once a year.
SumiOn will also have the option to report monthly and this can be enabled if desired.
-
Do I also have to report the packaging quantities to Rinki?
No. If you are Sumis customer in 2025, all packaging data for this year will be reported directly to SumiOn from 1.1.2026.
-
Will the traditional Rinki-style kg/packaging material reporting still be available?
Yes, it will. You can continue to report to SumiOn in the same way as before. You do not need to start using the new functionalities unless you want to. You can use the system as it suits you best and you can also combine different methods for entering the data; some materials can be reported in Rinki-style and some in the new way. The system sums up the data entered in different ways and compiles it into a clear summary overview.
-
Shouldn't sales volume be converted into kilos, who does that? Is it the producer?
The system automatically calculates the number of kilos placed on the market based on the sales volume, once the products and their packaging data have been entered into the system.
-
Will we still declare only packaging placed on the Finnish market? Do you report imports of raw material packaging or anything else in addition to this?
Yes, only packaging placed on the Finnish market is reported. Imported packaging is also reported as before. Although the system is new, there will be no changes to the reporting principals.
-
How are service packaging, private label products, contract customers, imported and exported product packaging and future transport packaging excluded or added?
For each product, there is a checkbox 'I am responsible for this product', which allows you to easily exclude this type of product and situation from your report. The producer responsibility button is set to 'yes' by default, but can be turned off per product with a single click.
-
What if a company has thousands of different products? Can you report by product group, for example?
Packaging data can also be exported to the system using Excel. If several products have the same packaging, you can also create duplicate packaging in the system, which can be easily attached to several products.
The next webinar will go into more detail on Excel reporting for companies with high sales volumes.
-
Can the system combine the so-called new way of reporting sales data with the old way of reporting for some packaging materials?
Yes, the system allows you to combine the new and old reporting methods. SumiOn calculates the packaging data entered in different ways in one clear summary view before sending the report.
-
Where and how are the quantities of imported materials reported?
For each material, it is determined whether the product is packaged in Finland or imported into Finland.
AI and information security
-
How is the security of the highly sensitive information provided by these companies ensured?
In the question there was also an additional mention of , 'especially as SumiOn is based on AI', we took this additional part out of the question itself as there is a misunderstanding here. The SumiOn system itself is not based on AI, but there isa separate AI bot within SumiOn that answers user questions about reporting, specifications and SumiOn user manuals.
All product data and sales volumes added by companies are only available to the users of the company in question. Neither the AI nor Sumi staff has access to this data. Sumi only sees the total volumes reported by the customer, which we use for billing and statistics.
-
Is the AI assistant programmed in such a way that we can trust it to actually give us the right information?
A brilliant and understandable question, to which the answer is yes - you can trust! The AI database from which the answers are sought is compiled by SUMI experts and is based on the law, PirELY guidelines and official definitions. The AI in the reporting system will NEVER look for answers on the open internet. The database is continuously updated.
In the event that the AI cannot answer a given question, it will direct you to contact Sumis customer service.
-
Can I change the language of SumiOn to English?
Yes. The language options in SumiOn are Finnish, Swedish and English.
Registration and timetables
-
When will we get access to the SumiOn reporting portal?
Customers will be able to log in to SumiOn during December. A login link and instructions will be sent by email.
In the first week of December, we will also send out comprehensive SumiOn Pre-Accession Guide to help customers prepare for the upcoming reporting.
-
What is the reporting deadline for 2025?
Reporting of 2025 packaging data will start on 1.1.2026 and the deadline will be in January-February. We will inform you about this in good time during December.
-
Does SumiOn receive customer company data directly?
Yes, SumiOn automatically receives the customer company's data from the producer responsibility transfer agreement.
